It's hard to believe how quickly you are growing, and I say that realizing that I seem to say that in every post but it's true! Before your first birthday, only 3-4 months ago, you were just beginning to take your first steps. Now, you are motoring along with your own version of running (usually with your hands waving in the air - much like Kermit the Frog/puppet style when you're super excited).
You used to love having baths, running to the bathroom when you heard the tell-tale sign of water running. Now you come, but your enjoy the idea of it more than the bath itself. Instead of sitting in the tub, you are often standing in it, reaching for Mommy to take you out and holding onto me for dear life. We can sometimes entice you to stay by one of your favourite activities - blowing bubbles (something you are beginning to learn to do on your own but like the idea of dipping the wand into the bottle more than anything). You also really enjoy splashing Mommy with water, getting me very drenched. But, it is also during bath time that we realized that you like the song "Row Your Boat", especially when we say, "If you see a crocodile, don't forget to scream...AAAAH!" You are beginning to scream on cue, which is quite adorable!
You have also begun to master reverse crawling and using it to help you go down stairs or off the couch/chair/bed you might be sitting on. It's really cute to see you reversing your body from about 5 feet away in preparation of going down the two steps in the hallway to head towards the front door, even if it really isn't necessary to start from that far away.
You have also begun to enjoy your very own jumping castle. Okay, so it's just a huge king-size bed in the spare room but you often ask to go "UP" so that you can jump, bounce, and get tickled on. It's especially amazing to see how quickly you've also learned to reverse off the bed, often holding onto the covers to assist with the lowering of your body to the ground - and you did this all on your own.
We have to watch what we say around you, our little parrot. About a month ago, I dropped something when feeding you and said, "shit". Without missing a beat, you looked at me and repeated the word, then went on with eating. I couldn't help but laugh, but I definitely hid my face when I did so...I don't want my daughter to be a potty mouth! That said, you are becoming quite proficient in pointing at something you'd like and saying "That" until we give it to you. (If we don't, however, it CAN lead to a bit of a tantrum on your part.)
You enjoy listening to some new books. Your current favourites are "The Paperbag Princess", "Each Peach Pear Plum" (where you enjoy looking for creatures/objects in the pictures), and "Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?" You also love to go for a ride in your little red wagon, asking us to put up the garage door to get to it.
You also enjoyed your first experience in the pool with Daddy, Nana, Grandad, and Thomas. It was at cousin Terry's house. Mommy sat on the edge of the pool and you would come and sit in my lap until you were comfortable, but when you were comfortable you had a great time splashing around!
One of your favourite things to do this summer, thanks to our new neighbours, is watching the workers work and the machines that they have as they build a pool in the yard next door. This is especially true when Nonno comes on Fridays and you spend a bit of your morning watching the workers work.
One latest addition to Nana and Grandad's house is the arrival of their new dog, a 5 year old Golden Doodle named Fara. You were super excited to see the "bow-wow" and kept trying to touch her (although it also meant possibly poking her in the eye). Luckily Fara is so mellow, she just ignored the pokes, but enjoyed your company. We can't wait to see your enjoyment of having a dog to visit as well when we go see Nana and Grandad.
This week we will be ending your first set of music classes. You have enjoyed playing with the instruments that are offered, listening to the songs, dancing to the rhythm, or just enjoying watching yourself in the mirror at the dance studio and pointing at the clock. At home, you enjoy watching some episodes of the Wiggles and are beginning to dance along with what you see on TV. (Although we do limit the amount you do watch.) Still, it's great watching you dance and groove to the music.
Funny story before I end: A couple of weeks ago, Daddy was watching you while I went to take a shower. I heard Daddy cry out in pain, but I had no idea what had happened. Apparently, while Daddy was lying on the ground and playing with you, you grabbed the piggy bank you were given for your first birthday and whacked Daddy on the head with it really hard (to the point he was seeing stars). While he was adjusting to the pain, the song "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson came on the radio where you proceeded to stop what you were doing and began dancing with the rhythm of the song. Daddy got some of that on video (although he said your best dance moves he didn't record in time because he was still nursing a sore head).
